Some of the bigest encyclopaedias of the western Middle Ages were composed during the XIIIth century, whereas the XIIth century is supposed to be poorer in this domain. However, in that time, the german abbess Hildegard of Bingen († 1179 ) undertook to describe and list the Creation in her Liber subtilitatum diversarum naturarum creaturarum better known today as Physica, and she can be doubtless also counted among the encyclopaedists of the Middle Ages. She deviates nevertheless by certain aspects of the laws of the genre, in particular by the original position which she adopts and even claims with regard to the sources of her writings.
